1. Dấu câu trong tiếng Anh là gì?
Dấu câu (punctuation): cũng như trong tiếng Việt, dấu câu trong tiếng Anh cũng được sử dụng để kết thúc câu, để ngắn câu, biểu lộ tình cảm, cảm xúc,v…v… tuy nhiên việc sử dụng đúng dấu câu trong tiếng Anh vẫn chưa được nhiều người để tâm tìm hiểu bởi ai cũng cho rằng cách dùng của chúng cũng giống như trong tiếng Việt, nhưng giữa chúng vẫn có những điểm khác nhau.

2. Cách đọc dấu trong tiếng Anh chuẩn

3. Cách sử dụng các dấu câu trong tiếng Anh
3.1. Dấu chấm
Dấu chấm trong tiếng Anh có 2 cách đọc dấu chấm trong tiếng Anh là “dot” hoặc “full stop”. Chúng được đặt ở cuối dòng nhằm kết thúc một câu hoàn chỉnh. Thông thường, đó sẽ lời tường thuật, mô tả hoặc phát biểu một sự thật.

3.2. Dấu phẩy
Dấu phẩy là một dấu câu trong tiếng Anh có cực nhiều công dụng khác nhau.
Chúng được sử dụng để liệt kê ít nhất 3 mục trở lên trong một chuỗi.

Tương tự, chúng cũng giúp phân tách hai mệnh đề độc lập thành hai vế ngắn hơn. Chính vì thế mà chúng ta có nguyên tắc sử dụng mệnh đề quan hệ có dấu phẩy trong tiếng Anh.
Tác dụng của dấu phẩy còn thể hiện ở việc ngắt câu, nghỉ quãng trong các lời thoại nói chuyện trực tiếp. Cuối cùng, dấu phẩy được sử dụng để phân tách các mệnh đề quan hệ riêng rẽ với danh từ và cụm danh từ.
Trong tiếng Anh, dấu phẩy được sử dụng giữa hai mệnh đề chính khi chúng được phân cách bởi các từ nối như “and” hoặc “but” còn với tiếng Việt thì dấu câu trong trường hợp này là không cần thiết. Ngoài ra, trong câu gián tiếp tiếng Anh sẽ dùng dấu phẩy ngay sau mệnh đề giới thiệu để trích dẫn. Thay vào đó, tiếng Việt sẽ sử dụng dấu hai chấm.
Ví dụ:
- He said, “I have learned Chinese for 2 years”.
- Anh ta nói: “Tôi đã học tiếng Trung 2 năm rồi”.
Đúng: the powerful, resonating sound caught our attention.
Sai: the powerful, resonating, sound caught our attention.
Do cách sử dụng dấu phẩy trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt có sự khác nhau nhất định nên những người học tiếng Anh cần đặc biệt lưu ý để tránh dùng sai dấu trong ngữ pháp và các bài viết luận.
3.3. Dấu chấm hỏi
Tương tự như trong tiếng Việt, dấu chấm hỏi được đặt ở cuối câu nhằm thể hiện ý nghi vấn của người nói nhằm nhận được câu trả lời hoặc xác nhận từ đối phương. Tuy nhiên, trong một số trường hợp, mà cụ thể là ở các câu hỏi tu từ, dấu chấm hỏi vẫn được sử dụng dù người ta lại không mong chờ một câu trả lời nào cả.
Ví dụ: What has humanity done about the growing concern regarding global warming?
3.4. Dấu chấm than
Chấm than là một dấu câu trong tiếng Anh được sử dụng rất phổ biến để thể hiện sự ngạc nhiên, vui sướng hoặc đơn giản là lúc muốn nhấn mạnh một ý nào đó.
Tuy nhiên, trong văn viết, đặc biệt là văn viết học thuật yêu cầu sự công tâm, dấu chấm than thường bị hạn chế sử dụng.
Ví dụ:
- I can’t believe how difficult the exam was!
- Eek! You scared me!
3.5. Dấu hai chấm
Bên cạnh 4 loại trên, dấu hai chấm cũng là một dấu câu trong tiếng Anh được thường xuyên sử dụng trong cả văn nói và viết.
Công dụng của chúng là dùng phân tách 2 mệnh đề độc lập, đặc biệt là khi 1 trong 2 hoặc cả 2 mệnh đề đều ngắn và có nội dung tương tự như nhau. Ngoài ra, dấu hai chấm còn có tác dụng đánh dấu lời nói trực tiếp của nhân vật trong văn viết hoặc kể chuyện.
Ví dụ:
The professor has given me three options: to retake the exam, to accept the extra credit assignment, or to fail the class.
Mặt khác, đây lại là một ví dụ sai:
The Easter basket contained: Easter eggs, chocolate rabbits, and other candy. Trong trường hợp này đơn giản bạn chỉ cần lược bỏ dấu hai chấm.
3.6. Dấu chấm phẩy
Tác dụng của dấu chấm phẩy thể hiện ở vai trò như một liên từ để nối các mệnh đề chính trong câu với nhau. Thông thường, 1 trong 2 mệnh đề hoặc cả 2 mệnh đề này đều ngắn và có nội dung tương tự nhau.
Còn đối với một câu văn quá dài, dù đã có liên từ để nối 2 mệnh đề với nhau nhưng dấu chấm phẩy vẫn có thể được sử dụng trước liên từ phối hợp để câu văn được rõ ràng, dễ hiểu hơn.
Trên đây là một số cách sử dụng các dấu câu trong tiếng Anh được thường xuyên xuất hiện nhất. Nắm vững những điều trên sẽ giúp bạn biết cách áp dụng dấu câu một cách hiệu quả và tinh tế.

- – dấu gạch ngang dài = dash
- ‘ ‘ dấu trích dẫn đơn = single quotation mark
- ” ” dấu trích dẫn kép = double quotation marks
- ( ) dấu ngoặc = parenthesis (hoặc ‘brackets’)
- [ ] dấu ngoặc vuông = square brackets
- & dấu và= ampersand
- → dấu mũi tên = arrow
- + dấu cộng = plus
- – dấu trừ = minus
- Thuốc nổ ở dạng hóa hợp, có tinh thể màu trắng hoặc màu tro, độc, khó tan trong nước lã, nhưng tan trong nước sôi. × dấu nhân = is multiplied by

5. Những lưu ý khi sử dụng dấu câu
- Vị trí của dấu câu trước hoặc sau dấu nháy kép đóng là khác nhau.
- Tiếng Anh Mỹ luôn luôn đặt dấu chấm (dấu chấm hết câu) và dấu phẩy bên trong dấu nháy kép, “like so.” Tiếng Anh Anh thường đặt dấu chấm và dấu phẩy sau dấu nháy kép, “like so”, trừ trường hợp trong cuộc đối thoại khi dấu chấm câu phải ở bên trong dấu nháy kép: “like so,” he said.
- Dấu chấm phẩy và dấu hai chấm luôn luôn đứng ngoài dấu nháy kép, “like so”;
- Việc sử dụng dấu hỏi chấm và dấu chấm than khác nhau tùy thuộc vào ngữ cảnh. Nếu toàn bộ câu là câu hỏi, và lời trích dẫn là một từ hoặc cụm từ ở cuối câu, dấu chấm hỏi sẽ ở bên ngoài dấu nháy kép. Nếu toàn bộ câu là câu tường thuật và lời trích dẫn là câu hỏi thì dấu chấm hỏi sẽ ở bên trong dấu nháy kép.

- Nhiều chuyên gia ngữ pháp tin rằng dấu ngoặc đơn và dấu phẩy thường hoán đổi được cho nhau khi thiết lập thông tin. Điều này đôi khi đúng, tuy nhiên vẫn có một số trường hợp dấu ngoặc đơn lại phù hợp hơn, chẳng hạn như trong việc nói đến suy nghĩ cá nhân của một người.

- Nếu bạn không muốn dùng dấu phẩy thứ tự (serial comma), hãy chắc chắn rằng ý nghĩa của câu có thể đứng vững mà không có nó. Hãy xem xét ví dụ sau đây về câu cần có dấu phẩy thứ tự: “My heroes are my parents, Mother Teresa and the Pope.”
- Mặc dù dấu gạch ngang và dấu ngoặc đơn có cách sử dụng tương tự như nhau, nhưng hãy ghi nhớ rằng dấu ngoặc đơn thể hiện “sự chú giải” mạnh hơn dấu gạch ngang.

Ví dụ, một số công ty sử dụng dấu phẩy thứ tự (a, b, and c) và những công ty khác thì không (a, b and c).
