Các trạng từ trong tiếng Anh thông dụng và nghĩa trong tiếng Anh, bên cạnh chủ ngữ, động từ và tân ngữ, trạng từ là một thành phần quan trọng không kém góp phần làm rõ ý nghĩa của câu. Trạng từ là những từ dùng để bổ nghĩa không chỉ cho động từ, tính từ mà còn cho một trạng từ khác hay cho cả câu. 1. Trạng từ chỉ cách thức (manner)

Là các từ dùng để diễn tả cách thức một hành động được thực hiện như thế nào. Ví dụ như: một cách cẩn thận, cẩu thả, hay lười biếng …. Trạng từ chỉ cách thức thường đứng sau động từ hoặc đứng sau tân ngữ nếu trong câu có tân ngữ.

Ex: He sings badly. She does her homework carefully.

2. Trạng từ chỉ thời gian (Time)

Là các từ dùng để diễn tả thời gian thực hiện hành động, ví dụ như: hôm nay, hôm qua, tuần trước, tháng trước… Chúng được dùng để trả lời cho câu hỏi When? (Khi nào?) Các trạng từ chỉ thời gian thường được đặt ở cuối câu, đôi khi đặt ở đầu câu khi có ý nhấn mạnh. 

Ex: I want to go home now. Yesterday she took the final exams.

3. Trạng từ chỉ tần suất (Frequency)

Là các từ dùng để diễn tả mức độ thường xuyên của hành động nào đó, ví dụ như: thỉnh thoảng, thường thường, luôn luôn, ít khi … Chúng được dùng để trả lời cho câu hỏi How often? Vị trí trong câu của chúng là đứng sau động từ tobe và trước động từ thường.

Ex: Mai is always on time. I usually play football.

4. Trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn (Place)

Là các từ dùng để diễn tả vị trí diễn ra hành động. Chúng dùng để trả lời cho câu hỏi Where? (Ở đâu?). Trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn thường đặt ở giữa câu, ngay sau động từ chính hoặc sau mệnh đề mà nó bổ nghĩa.

Ex: I am standing here.

5. Trạng từ chỉ mức độ (Grade)

Là các từ dùng để diễn tả mức độ (ít, khá, nhiều, quá…) xảy ra của hành động hay tính chất nào đó; chúng thường đứng trước động từ, tính từ hoặc trạng từ mà chúng bổ nghĩa. 

Ex: The flowers are very beautiful. My sister speaks Chinese too quickly.

6. Trạng từ nghi vấn (Questions)

Là các từ đứng đầu câu dùng để hỏi, các từ thường gặp bao gồm: 

  • When /wen/: khi nào
  • Where /weə/: ở đâu
  • Why /wai/: tại sao
  • How /hau/: như thế nào

Ex: When do you go to school?

Các trạng từ mang nghĩa khẳng định, phủ định, phỏng đoán: 

  • Certainly /’sə:tnli/: chắc chắn
  • Perhaps / pə’hæps/: có lẽ
  • Maybe / ‘meibi:/: có lẽ
  • Surely / ‘∫ɔ:li /: chắc chắn
  • Of course: dĩ nhiên

7. Trạng từ chỉ số lượng ( Quantity)

Là các từ dùng để diễn tả số lượng của sự vật, sự việc. Trạng từ chỉ số lượng có tác dụng nhấn mạnh, nhắc tới các sự việc được diễn ra với số lượng/lượt ít hay nhiều.

Ex: My sons study rather little.

Các trạng từ chỉ số lượng thông dụng trong tiếng Anh là:

  • Fully /´fuli/: đầy đủ, hoàn toàn
  • Twice /twaɪs/: hai lần
  • Little /’lit(ә)l/: ít, một chút, hơi hơi
  • Few /fju:/: ít, vài

8. Những trạng từ trong tiếng Anh đặc biệt

Thông thường, trạng từ trong tiếng Anh được nhận biết qua hình thức của nó với cấu trúc chung là tính từ thêm đuôi -ly. Tuy nhiên, không phải trạng từ thì đều có đuôi là ly và không phải từ nào có đuôi ly cũng là trạng từ. Trong tiếng Anh có một số trạng từ đặc biệt. Chúng có hình thức giống hệt với tính từ của chính nó. 

Ex: This book is too hard. ( hard là tính từ)

 She was working hard. ( hard là trạng từ)
