1. Những điều cần biết về Idioms

Thành ngữ là một cụm từ mà khi bạn nhìn vào các từ trong đó bạn không thể hiểu được rõ ràng ý nghĩa của cả cụm từ. Tương tự như thành ngữ của Việt Nam, Idioms được cấu tạo từ các từ, cụm từ khác nhau thành một cụm từ dài hơn, mang ý nghĩa riêng và khác so với ý nghĩa của các từ cộng lại.

Hay nói cách khác, hiểu Idioms – thành ngữ là hiểu theo nghĩa bóng, không hiểu nghĩa đen.

Sử dụng Idioms là một yếu tố để giúp bạn đạt điểm cao hơn trong IELTS. Nhưng cũng giống như tiếng Việt, số lượng thành ngữ (Idioms) là một con số khủng và không thể nào học hết được. Chính vì thế bạn chỉ nên tập trung học những idiom thông dụng trong IELTS để dễ dàng áp dụng hơn.

Chìa khóa để hiểu được các thành ngữ tiếng anh là đừng bao giờ nhìn vào từng từ riêng lẻ và hiểu chúng theo nghĩa đen. Bởi các từ đó không có nghĩa đen liên kết với nhau. Thay vào đó bạn cần tìm hiểu ngữ cảnh để có thể hiểu ý nghĩa thực sự của chúng.

2.1. Có thể sử dụng trong cả Speaking và Writing

  • On the dot 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: Happens at a particular time, precise time, exactly time. 

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Ở một thời điểm thời gian chính xác

Ví dụ:

The class will start at 8:00 a.m. on the dot, so don’t be late! 

  • Read my/your/his mind

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: Refers to the idea that thoughts are known by another.  

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Chỉ một ý tưởng hoặc suy nghĩ đã được người khác biết

Ví dụ:

I was surprised he knew what I was planning, like he could read my mind. 

  • Before long 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: A rather short amount of time. 

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Một khoảng thời gian khá ngắn

Ví dụ:

I will be gone before long, but I hope you learn a lot 

  • (The) bottom line

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: Most important number or information. 

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Con số hoặc thông tin quan trọng nhất

Ví dụ:

My bottom line to do this job is freedom from meddling! 
Don’t give me the details of what the client said about the bid, just tell me his bottom line.  

  • Change one’s mind 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: To change a decision or opinion. 

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: thay đổi quyết định hoặc quan điểm

Ví dụ:

Nothing you have told me motivates me to change my mind.  

  • Catch your/my/his eye 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: Something or someone that has a visual attraction for you, can be a written description as well. Really is often used to introduce this idiom.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: một thứ gì hoặc một ai đó khiến bạn bị thu hút khi nhìn vào, từ Really thường được dùng kèm với thành ngữ này.

Ví dụ:

That pretty girl really caught my eye.  Do any of these watches catch your eye? The price on that advertised special really caught my eye. 

  • (On the) cutting edge

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: the most modern, up to date process or product/equipment 

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: thiết bị/quy trình/ sản phẩm hiện đại và tiên tiến nhất

Ví dụ:

His teaching process is on the cutting edge.  This new computer is cutting edge technology. 

  • White elephant 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: an unprofitable investment, something that is large and unwieldy and is  a nuisance and/or expensive to maintain. 

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: một sự đầu tư không mang lại lời nhuận, một thứ to cồng kềnh và đắt tiền nhưng lại vô ích

Ví dụ:

That new motorbike I bought is really a white elephant, it is expensive and too big for these streets.

Các Idioms sau đây chỉ sử dụng trong Speaking mà không được dùng trong Writing:

  • And then some

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: And even more; and more than has been mentioned. 

Nghĩa tiếng việt: thậm chí hơn, hơn những gì đã được đề cập tới.

  • Find my feet

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: To become comfortable doing something.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: cảm thấy thoải mái để làm việc gì

Ví dụ:

Moving to a new city was difficult as first, but I soon found my feet.

  • Cost an arm and a leg  

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: Really expensive.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: thực sự ấn tượng

Ví dụ:

This dress is really nice, but itcost me an arm and a leg.

  • Set in their ways

  • Burn the midnight oil

We’re gonna have to burn the midnight oil to get this job done by tomorrow.                       

  • Call it a day 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: end the job (or task) for the day, (or night)

Ví dụ:

Well, it was nice chatting with you, but it’s time for me to call it a day.        

  • Over the moon 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to be extremely pleased or happy.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: vô cùng hài lòng và hạnh phúc

Ví dụ:

I was over the moon when I passed my speaking test.

  • (Right) off the top of my head 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: saying something without giving it too much thought or without precise knowledge.

Ví dụ:

You are familiar enough with the data.  Give us the information off the top of your head.

  • Down in the dumps  

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: unhappy, sad 

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: bất hạnh, buồn

Ví dụ:

She’s a bit down in the dumps because she failed one of her exams.

  • Put all your eggs in one basket  

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: put all your money or effort into one thing.

  • Chill out

  • Miss the boat

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: miss an opportunity.

I sent my application in late and I think I missed the boat.

  • (To be) fed up with 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: tired of, disgusted with

  • Once in a blue moon 

Nghĩa tiếng Anh: happens very rarely.
