Các dạng câu tường thuật (Reported Speech) trong tiếng Anh

Để học tốt ngữ pháp tiếng Anh người học cần nắm chắc nền kiến thức căn bản nhất. Từ đó, mới có thể cải thiện và bổ sung các kiến thức mới. 1. Câu tường thuật là gì?

Ta sử dụng câu tường thuật này khi muốn thuật lại một cách gián tiếp câu nói, ngôn ngữ của người nào đó. Hay hiểu theo cách đơn giản đó là đi từ hình thức câu trực tiếp (trích dẫn trong dấu ngoặc kép) đưa về câu gián tiếp thông qua sự biểu đạt với hình thức tường thuật.

2. Cách chuyển câu trực tiếp sang câu tường thuật trong tiếng Anh

a. Câu trực tiếp là câu kể

Đây là câu phát biểu thường gặp nhất, đồng thời cũng dễ thực hiện nhất với 4 bước như sau

Cấu trúc: S + say(s) / said hoặc tell / told + (that) + S + V

• Bước 1: Lựa chọn một động từ chính trong câu gián tiếp (có thể là say/tell, còn ở thể quá khứ là said/ told)
  Lưu ý: Trong quá trình tường thuật từ câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp thì thường động từ giới thiệu sẽ ở thể quá khứ, có hay không từ “that” đều được.
  Ví dụ: Jane said (that) she didn’t follow her plan.
• Bước 2: Lùi thì sẽ phù hợp trong câu tường thuật (thường động từ chính sẽ bị lùi 1 thì so với ở câu trực tiếp). Chúng ta sẽ căn cứ vào bảng sau để thực hiện:

Present perfect (thì hiện tại hoàn thành)	Past perfect (quá khứ hoàn thành)
Past perfect (quá khứ hoàn thành)	Past perfect (quá khứ hoàn thành)
Present perfect continuous (thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn)	Past perfect continuous (thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn)
Past continuous (thì quá khứ tiếp diễn)	Past perfect continuous (thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn)
Future (tương lai đơn)	Present conditional (Điều kiện ở hiện tại)
Future continuous (tương lai tiếp diễn)	Conditional continuous (điều kiện tiếp diễn)

Còn đối với động từ khiếm khuyết (Modal Verbs) sẽ được chuyển đổi như sau:

1. Can → Could
2. May → Might
3. Must → Must / Had to

Chú ý: có một vài Modal Verbs không được lùi thì: might, could, would, should, ought to.

Đối với trường hợp câu trực tiếp thể hiện một sự thật, một chân lý tự nhiên hay khi động từ chính trong câu tường thuật ở dạng hiện tại (say/ tell) thì các bạn có thể bỏ qua bước lùi thì này.

Ví dụ:

1. My mother said: “You are a kind and polite girl.”
   -> My mother said (that) I was a kind and polite girl.
2. He said to me: “I very love my girlfriend.”
   -> He told me (that) he very loved my girlfriend.

• Bước 3: Đổi các đại từ chính, đại từ sở hữu, tính từ sở hữu hoặc tân ngữ trong câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp phù hợp

Lưu ý: Trong trường hợp biến đổi câu nói của chính mình sang câu tường thuật thì bước 3 này sẽ bỏ qua.

• Bước 4: Đổi các trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn và thời gian thích hợp nhất khi biến đổi sang câu tường thuật bạn nhé.

Dạng câu hỏi trả lời Yes or No (Yes/No question)

Câu dạng này thường được bắt đầu bằng động từ To be hoặc trợ động từ (Do/ does/ did) trong tiếng Anh. Nó vẫn có biến đổi bình thường như ở loại câu tường thuật của câu phát biểu.

Khi sử dụng động từ chính trong câu tường thuật là: Ask, inquire, wonder, want to know,… sau nó cần phải có một liên từ phù hợp

Có thể làm dễ dàng bằng cách để “If” hoặc “Whether” ngay sau các động từ chính nhằm thể hiện sự hỏi han, nghi vấn là có hay không.

Cấu trúc: S + asked (+object) + if/whether + S + V

Ví dụ: The boss said: “Do you want to give a presentation?”

-> The boss asked me if/whether I wanted to give a presentation.

Dạng câu hỏi có từ hỏi (Wh-Question)

Đây vẫn được coi là dạng câu hỏi như không phải trả lời Yes/No nhưng nó có các từ hỏi cụ thể như What, Who, When, Why,… Cách thực hiện chuyển đôi vẫn y như cũ, chỉ cần ghi nhớ một số lưu ý ngay dưới đây.

Phải ghi lại từ hỏi cụ thể khi chuyển sang câu tường thuật (không dùng if/whether thay thế). Ngoài ra, cần thay đổi các trật tự trong câu hỏi thành câu trần thuật hợp lý.

Cấu trúc: S + asked (+object) + what/ when/… + S + V

Ví dụ: Rose said: “When do you visit my hometown again?”

-> Rose wanted to know when I visited her hometown again.

d. Câu mệnh lệnh

Loại câu tường thuật dạng mệnh lệnh ở thể khẳng định chúng ta có:
Cấu trúc: S + told + Object + to-inf

Ví dụ: “ Please cook a meal for me, Mary.” Mary’s boyfriend said

-> Mary’s boyfriend told her to cook a meal for him.

Loại câu tường thuật dạng mệnh lệnh ở thể phủ định chúng ta có:

Cấu trúc: S + told + Object + not to-inf

Ví dụ: “Don’t open the window in my room.” Jack said

-> Jack told me not to open the window in his room.

Ngoài từ told dùng khi tường thuật dạng mệnh lệnh, các bạn cũng có thể thay đổ sang các từ tương tự như: ask, order, tell, advise, beg, warn, command, remind, instruct,…

e. Câu điều kiện có lời nói gián tiếp

Với câu điều kiện loại 1 diễn tả sự thật hiển nhiên, chân lý thì áp dụng phương pháp chung là lùi thì bình thường.

Ví dụ: She said: “If I can study in this school, I will be become a good student.”

-> She said (that) if she could study in that school, she would be become a good student.

Với câu điều kiện loại 2 và 3 diễn tả một điều không có thật, mong muốn, giả sử thì khi chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang gián tiếp chỉ cần giữ nguyên không đổi là được.

Ví dụ: “ If I were you, I wouldn’t do that.” My friend said

-> My friend said if he was me, he wouldn’t do that.
